- In this video, I'm going to briefly show how you can install R on the Mac. It's a very simple process, it only takes a few steps. So the first thing you need to do is open your web browser and go to CRAN, this is the Comprehensive R Archive Network, and you'll see that there are a number of options for you to download here for different platforms.
- OK, I realized what I was doing 'wrong': I called lsp-mode before lsp-cquery-enable. When lsp-mode is on, lsp-cquery-enable won't do anything. Actually, lsp-cquery-enable will turn on lsp-mode if it's not on yet Doing any of the 2 erroneous steps (either M-x lsp-mode or M-x lsp-mode lsp-cquery-enable) results in no warnings whatsoever, things simply don't work.

Important note about R 4.0.0
Starting with R 4.0.0 alpha we are building R using standard Apple tools (Xcode 11.4) and GNU Fortran 8.2 from fxcoudert and the target is macOS 10.13 (High Sierra). All dependent static libraries are available in the libs-4 directory. Please make sure you remove any modifications to build flags from your home since no custom compilers are used anymore. For more information about alternative OpenMP options (as in older version) see the openmp page of this site.

The installer image (*.pkg) is packaged exactly the same way as the CRAN release of R (including the GUI) and it will update your R version (unless you use pkgutil - see instructions during installation and/or the 'Multiple versions'section of the R Installation and Administration manual).
Alternatively, you can use the tar-ball (*.tar.gz) in the table above. The tar-ball must be unpacked in the root directory using:
$ tar fvxz R*.tar.gz -C /
NOTE: The tar-ball does not contain the GUI (see below for a separate download).
NOTE: The installer includes Tcl/Tk package which will install in /usr/local. It is optional (only needed for the tcltk R package) and can be unchecked at installation time.

To install, open the image and drag the R icon to your Applications folder. Alternatively the GUI can be run directly off that image without copying if you just want to test it. Build configurations with '64' suffix are 64-bit builds, all others are 32-bit (except for Debug). If you want to use both, rename one of them or place them in different directories.
Tools
In order to compile R and R packages you will need Xcode Developer Tools and a Fortran compiler. For details and download, please read the Tools page. The R 4.0.0 and higer binaries are built using Xcode 11.4.Experimental binary packages
This site no longer hosts experimental packages. It is now the master repository for released R package binaries. If you have issues with other mirrors, try using https://mac.r-project.org/ as your mirror as it is updated first.Legacy R
The current build supports only macOS X 10.13 (High Sierra) or higher. Older versions of macOS are not supported in binary form, but R can be compiled from sources for such legacy OS versions. Last released version for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) was R 2.10.1, last release for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) was R 2.15.3, last release for Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) was R 3.6.3.Other binaries
The following binaries are not maintained or supported by R-core and are provided without any guarantee and for convenience only (Mac OS X 10.4.4 or higher required). R is a comprehensive statistical programming language that iscooperatively developed on the Internet as an open source project. Itis often referred to as the “GNU S,” because it almostcompletely emulates the S programming language. It has packages to doregression, ANOVA, general linear models, hazard models andstructural equations.Graphical output can be created using a TeX plug-in to convert the standard ASCII-based output.
R has a massive range of tests, PDF and PostScript output, a function to expand zip archives, and numerous other unexpected features. R programs and algorithms are distributed by the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). A simple graphic user interface is included for Mac users; R Commander can be installed using the built-in package installer, which can also install file import features (which aren't installed by default). R Commander is an X11 program, which means it uses an alien interface and has odd open/save dialogues, but if you get past that it offers menu driven commands not dissimilar from, say, SPSS, just a lot more awkward to use, and without an output or data window.
Like many open source projects, R is exceedingly capable but has a steep learning curve. Some believe this is for the best because people will get a deeper understanding of the statistics they generate with a program such as R, versus one which allows the rapid creation of scads of irrelevant statistics leading to incorrect conclusions. Those who expect even a basic graphical interface (e.g. SPSS 4) may be disappointed by the R community’s definition of a GUI.

Last week I finally put R through its paces on two recent experiments from our lab. It performed spectacularly. It's pretty easy to learn using online tutorials, in particular John Verzani's tutorial which is a course in introductory statistics using R.
The highlight: figuring out the 15 or so commands to import, parse, slice and graph a 3-way comparison of control subjects using a scatterplot and a violin plot. Then using BBEdit to search and replace the word 'control' with my two experimental conditions, pasting that back into R, and generating a report with all 6 graphs in about 3 keystrokes! But the major advantages of R are that it is absolutely cross-platform (Linux, MacOS, Windows) and that it's open source. You've a good chance of accessing your data 10 years from now, which I wouldn't say with the commercial packages. The user base is large, active, and productive. The S language on which it's based is a well-accepted standard in statistics. R has stood the test of time and is likely to continue to do so.
There is one significant caveat: R is relentlessly command-line driven, and even the graphs cannot be edited with mouse clicks. It's trivial to take the PDF graphs into Illustrator, though, so this limitation hasn't been a problem for me.

S and R Programming Languages
Beginning in 1976, the Sprogramming language was developed at Bell Labs (whose statisticsdepartment employed John Tukey and Joseph Kruskal) by John Chambersand others. Version 1 required Honeywell mainframes, Version 2 (1980)added Unix support, Version 3 (1988) added functions and objects, andVersion 4 (1998) added full support for object-oriented design. In 1993, Bell Labs issued an exclusive license toStatSci (later MathSoft).S-Plus is Mathsoft’s commercial implementation of S, and the only waythe language is available outside Lucent.
R was begun by Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka of the Universityof Auckland. It is now an opensource project staffed by volunteers from around the world whose development is coordinated through the Comprehensive R Archivenetwork. Source code, binaries, and documentation areat the CRAN website.
